Second round of WYCO 2018 ended with the last game on the 3rd board that brought a surprising victory to Sri Lanka against Israel. Other top seeds, Uzbekistan and India won again. USA, Ukraine, Turkey-Red, Belarus, Moldova and Georgia are also 2/2. To sum up, 9 teams have managed to win on both rounds so far.

 

Third round of the tournament will start at 17:00 p.m (GMT+3) today.

First round of WYCO 2018 had completed tonight. This great competition witnessed to many surprising results such that from the first 5 top seed, only Uzbekistan (1st top seed) and India (3rd top seed) managed to survive out of this round without wounds. 

 

On the second board, 2nd top seed, Russia (ELO average of 2440) is drawn by 2-2 against number 25, China. One of the 4 GMs of the tournament, Esipenko (2609) is drawn against Huang, Renjie with black.

 

Portugal won against 4th top seed, Azerbaijan, by 2.5-1.5. FM Veiga and Santos won against IM Gadimbayli and IM Garayev at the first and third board as two important games. Beydullayeva won at the 4th board but this was not enough to save the half point for her team.

 

Most interesting game of the day was between Iran and Sri Lanka in which Sri Lanka shocked their opponent by changing the table pairing as standing their lowest rated player, Wijesinghe (1688) to the 1st  board against Iranian GM Firouzja (2607). Sri Lanka won the battle with 2.5-1.5 by getting full points from their 3rd and 4th boards. 2018 World Under-16 Chess Olympiad 2018 (which is hosted by Turkish Chess Federation and sponsored by Municipality of Selcuklu) is starting tomorrow in Konya.

 

The opening ceremony of the organization, which will consist of 46 teams and 112 athletes from 39 countries; will take place at the Selçuklu Convention Center tomorrow at 14.00.

Participants of World Youth U16 Chess Olympiad 2018 are invited to the fantastic show of famous Turkish dance company "Fire of Anatolia" at 20:00 on 24th November Saturday.
